Some well-known environmentalists have speculated that by 2050, if we don’t change current lifestyle and development trends that we may need the equivalent of 5 planets or more to support the growing demands we are placing on our fragile Earth. This is not an assessment backed by solid science but

The Five Planetary Principles

The 5Planets NPO is an incubator or womb by which embryonic ideas/concepts/technologies can be debated, fertilized, piloted, demonstrated and tested. These technologies need to pass our own 5Planetary Principles or filters as described below. Together these principles pioneer the depth of all three dimensions of sustainability (Ecological, Social, Economic). Once imbued with 5Planets DNA and grown into a demonstrated technology, any technologies can be commercially deployed to ensure maximum optimization. What is 5ive-Planets? We have been using our planet for decades as if we have 5 of them. The recent disaster in Northern Japan has vividly demonstrated the impact of a loss of food production capacity will have if we do not manage our resources more sustainably. 5ive-Planets is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to leverage education and technologies in ways that have direct relevance to the issues facing Northern Japan today. Starting with food production capacity building, using new combinations of technologies and age‐old wisdom, along with sustainable water and soil resource management, we aim to provide education and alternatives to facilitate recovery from the recent and on-going environmental disaster in Tohoku. There are solutions out there with experts who are willing to help and we aim to apply them NOW for the sake of the future. 5ive-Planets founder, Patricia Bader-Johnston, is a Canadian entrepreneur who has been a resident of Japan for almost 30 years. She is a long term resident of Yokohama.
