Mission
…Because we haven’t got five planets.
About 5ivePlanets
5ivePlanets is an Ippan Shadan Hojin registered in Kanagawa Prefecture with its Headquarters in Asahi-ku Yokohama. The mission of 5ivePlanets is to ensure sustainable food and resource supplies for the Children of the Future through effective use of appropriate technologies and education.
Some have speculated that by 2050, if we don’t change current lifestyle and development trends that we may need the equivalent of 5 planets to support the growing demands we are placing on our Earth. We believe that there are solutions that can actually increase the capacity of our planet and that with education, we can decrease the stress we are placing on the environment. The 5ive-Planets mission is to leverage both education and technologies that work in balance with the natural cycles of the earth to increase our capacity to provide for our collective children on the one and only planet we actually have. Starting with food production capacity building using new combinations of technologies and age-old wisdom, along with sustainable water and soil resource management, we aim to provide education and alternatives to our current disruptive lifestyle practices. We believe that we can adopt not only more benign lifestyle and economic practices, but that different approaches to food production and waste management have the potential to increase the capacity of the earth’s resources to meet all of our future needs.
Beginning at the community level and developed with a global vision in mind; our projects seek to address the pressures of growing demographic and energy demands and engage the communities at the local and global levels.
Our approach
By establishing the 5ivePlanets Interpretive Center in an eco-restored house in Asahi Ward of Yokohama City, we will provide education about managing resources wisely and demonstrate technologies to produce nourishing food without wasting water, depleting soil, or using petroleum based fertilizers. These concepts can be applied in both urban and rural contexts and are geared toward developing platforms for sustainable communities. We will also introduce carbon restorative waste management approaches that could be life-enhancing for thousands of women and children. Projects include proof of concept demos of aquaponics systems, biochar humanitarian stoves and urban agricultural techniques.
