Buy a Koi Nobori and send us an email via message2Tohoku@gmail.com with a message you would like to send to children who are living in shelters in the affected prefectures. Our volunteers will write your message on a white Koi Nobori and we will fly it in Yokohama’s Port on Childrens Day (May 5th). We will send all of the messages to shelters in the disaster zone following the event to be read and enjoyed by kids who need our continuing support. Join us and buy one now!!

Some well-known environmentalists have speculated that by 2050, if we don’t change current lifestyle and development trends that we may need the equivalent of 5 planets or more to support the growing demands we are placing on our fragile Earth. This is not an assessment backed by solid science but it is thought provoking and frighteningly all too believable for many of us who accept the idea of climate change. Globalization has accelerated trends of waste and over-consumption and spread them through a culture that the developing world has easily adopted in turn – to develop first and clean up later. The problem is, that the ability of the Earth to absorb the collateral damage from the development curve seems to be reaching its capacity. 5ivePlanets is an Ippan Shadan Hojin registered in Kanagawa Prefecture with its Headquarters in Asahi-ku Yokohama. The mission of 5ivePlanets is to ensure sustainable food and resource supplies for the Children of the Future through effective use of appropriate technologies and education.

The recent disaster in Northern Japan has brought home the fragility of the environment and the need for vigilant stewardship of the resources we have been given. As our first inaugural project 5ivePlanets will bring focus to the needs of children and communities in Tohoku and assist long term recovery following the recent disaster. We will attempt to fly thousands of Koi Nobori carrying messages from people all over the world dedicated to the Children of the Tohoku region in the Port of Yokohama on May 5th Children’s Day. These messages will be counted, and presented to representative children.

Please join us in Yokohama’s Zonohana Park from May 3 through 5. Booths will be set up throughout the 3 day outdoor event offering a variety of educational exhibits, fund-raising activities and entertainment for children. Funds raised will be donated to Hope International Development Agency relief efforts and community rebuilding initiatives aligned with the 5ivePlanets mandate, as well as local “Schools Building Schools” projects in Tohoku.

5ivePlanets Interpretive Center

The Headquarters of 5ivePlanets is a house in Asahi-ku, Yokohama generously donated by the Ogura Family. The Center which is due to open in May 2011, will feature an interpretive center introducing the potential of aquaponics and biochar as technologies that have the potential to enhance food production capacity in urban environments. Visitors will be able to view an aquaponics mini-unit and sample vegetables grown in a completely self-contained aquaponics system using no fertilizers. The systems use recycled water supplies, produce no waste and use biochar as a growth medium. There will also be biochar producing stoves on hand for demonstration, with applications in urban waste management and for humanitarian purposes.
